The world is burning with dissent, as large-scale protests are taking place in at least 6 countries across the world.
We have compiled a brief summary on just some of these.
1. Russia
Tens of thousands of people are protesting the arrest of opposition leader and anti-corruption activist, Alexei Navalny. Over 3500 people were detained.
2. India
2 to 3 lakh farmers are protesting across the country against 3 bills passed by the government for over 2 months. These protests turned violent during the Republic Day parade in the country’s capital, Delhi on Tuesday.
3. Netherlands
Anti-lockdown protests erupted across the country, mainly in Amsterdam and Rotterdam, after the government implemented a 9pm lockdown to curb the spread of coronavirus. More than 500 people have been arrested.
4. Tunisia
Hundreds of people are marching in the capital city of Tunis against the leadership. 10 years ago, during the Arab Spring revolutions, similar chants of “the people want the fall of the regime” were used. The youth is protesting against the dire state of the economy, the increasing levels of unemployment and the worsened situation due to the pandemic.
5. Nepal
Thousands of people are protesting against Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, who announced the decision of dissolution of the parliament and conducting elections one year ahead of schedule. Some of these activists protesting near the Prime Minister’s residence in Kathmandu were arrested on Monday.
6. Lebanon
Hundreds of protestors in Tripoli, Beirut and Sidon took to the streets as the curfew period in Lebanon was extended by two weeks. The unrest is also due to the political divisions in the country- the government resigned in August after the Beirut blast, and the new government has been in formation since.
