What is it?
As the name suggests, one-shot vaccine will have benefits over a two-dose vaccine because it can be administered to twice as many people in the same amount of time and thus reduce the spread.
Which one-Shot vaccines are currently available?
Johnson & Johnson- The Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccine is a viral vector vaccine which received Emergency Use Authorization from the FDA for individuals of age 18 years and older.
Efficacy: 66%
Sputnik Light- Sputnik Light consists of the first dose of the Sputnik V vaccine, which is based on the Ad26 vector and has been approved by Russia for individuals of age 18 years and older.
Efficacy: 79.4%
What is the status of approval in India?
Johnson & Johnson- India is looking to fast track the emergency approval as it is approved by western countries and the import is expected to start in June or July. One billion doses fo J&J vaccine will be manufactured in India by Hyderabad’s Biological E. under the Quad vaccine partnership. India Plans to procure some of them.
Sputnik Light- All stakeholders have been directed to fast track the approval and application process. It might become the first one-shot vaccine available in India.
What does this mean for India?
Considering the population and shortage of vaccines in India, the presence of a one-shot vaccine will make a huge difference purely from a time perspective. If these are approved soon, we might be able to vaccinate a considerable portion of the population before the predicted third wave in the country.
