Backdrop
The Indian farmers, specially from Haryana and Punjab, have been protesting against the recent farm bills introduced by the Indian government. In light of the ongoing protests, the farmer leaders have called for a “symbolic bandh” on December 8 from 11 AM to 3 PM.
Support on Bharat Bandh
The Bharat Bandh on December 8 has garnered support from various trade unions across the country. The Congress-ruled state of Punjab is likely to see complete support from the citizens. Moreover, multiple bank unions have promised to wear black at work to show their support. Most entry points in and out of Delhi will be blocked for non-emergency travel. Hundreds of mandis across the country are expected to extend their support to this movement.
Scale
The farmer leaders have now built up one of the most sophisticated and well-managed protests in Indian History. It is also touted to be the largest protest, in terms of the number of people involved, of the century.
Key takeaways
Unlike most protests in India, there has been no hint of violence from the protesting party. In fact- even after the protesting farmers were met with tear gas by Delhi Police, the farmer leaders were seen feeding Langar to the cops on Guru Nanak Jayanti.
Moreover, the farmer leaders haven’t allowed the government to divert the topic of discussion. The demands have been specific and there are clear representatives from the farmers who’re putting forward these asks.
External Support
Local Punjabi influencers and international celebrities have expressed support to the farmers. From Diljit and Priyanka to Lily Singh, the protest has seen backing from multiple high profile influencers. Moreover, there are discussions in the parliament of various countries condemning the farm laws and supporting the protest. The pressure to act on the Indian government is real!
What can we do?
Firstly, we can read up on the farm laws and understand the farmers’ ask. If you believe that their protest is justified and not misguided, create “digital pressure” on the government. Spreading awareness around the issue on your social media handle will go a long way!
