Recently, a controversial video showing Baba Ramdev saying, “Allopathy is stupid and diwaliya science” has been making rounds on the internet. In the same video, Ramdev can also be seen claiming that “lakhs and lakhs of people died because of administering allopathic medicines rather than a shortage of oxygen" amid the Covid-19 crisis.
Following this, the IMA sent a legal notice to Ramdev asking him to recall his words and issue an apology in national newspapers. IMA, in a press release, said that the statements by Ramdev are ill-advised and cast a bad light on health workers.
IMA also wrote to the Health Ministry asking it to take serious steps - to either accept the acquisition by Baba and dissolve modern medicine facilities or prosecute and book him under the Epidemic Diseases Act.
On being asked to apologize by Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan, Ramdev issued a letter accepting that allopathy has earned much dignity, has prospered with time and proven helpful during all the times of mankind’s healthcare needs.
However, Baba claims that the video has been tampered with to make him look bad and he was just reading a WhatsApp forward.
This apology however was followed by a more offensive statement. The very next day, Baba posted a set of 25 questions asking the IMA if allopathy offered permanent relief from hypertension (BP) and type-1 and 2 diabetes. “Does the pharma industry have permanent treatment for thyroid, arthritis, colitis and asthma?”, he asked.
Yesterday, IMA Uttarakhand sent a Rs 1000 crore defamation notice to the Patanjali founder. The notice stated that if Ramdev doesn’t post a video countering the statements against allopathic doctors, Rs 1000 crore will be demanded from him.
Baba’s reaction to this – “Arrest toh unka baap bhi nahi kar sakta”.
