Indian Army deploys K-9 Vajra self-propelled howitzers in Ladakh
The Indian Army, on Saturday, announced the deployment of its first K-9 Vajra self-propelled howitzer regiment in forward areas. The decision was taken after Army Chief General, MM Naravane, warned that China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) had deployed its troops in "considerable numbers" across eastern Ladakh. K-9 Vajra or K-9 Thunder is a 155 mm self-propelled howitzer that has been designed by South Korean firms Agency for Defense Development and Samsung Aerospace Industries.

Indian govt signs deal to replace IAF’s Avros with Airbus C295MW
On September 24, the Indian Air Force (IAF) became the 35th C295 operator worldwide, after it formalized its acquisition of 56 Airbus C295 aircraft. These aircraft will replace the legacy Avro fleet and the transport fleet of IAF will be modernized. This programme is also the first-ever in India where the private sector company will manufacture the aircraft locally and will contribute significantly to the developing country’s industrial eco-system, which will include manufacturing, assembling, testing and qualification.

IAF signs deal with France to purchase 24 Second-Hand Mirage-2000 fighter aircraft
The Indian Air Force (IAF) is set to acquire 24 second-hand Mirage 2000 fighters in an attempt to strengthen its ageing fleet of the 4th generation fighters, and also secure parts for its two existing squadrons of the aircraft. Out of the 24 fighters, 13 are in complete condition with engine and airframe intact, with eight of them (nearly half a squadron) ready to fly after servicing.

Centre dissolves Ordnance Factory Board, transfers employees, assets & management to 7 PSUs
The defence ministry has dissolved the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) with effect from October 1, and transferred its assets, employees and management to seven public sector units (PSUs), according to an official order. The names of the 7 defence PSUs (also called DPSUs) are Munition India Limited, Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited, Advanced Weapons and Equipment India Limited, Troop Comforts Limited, Yantra India Limited, India Optel Limited and Gliders India Limited.

Ministry of Defence orders 118 Arjun tanks for over INR 7,000 crore
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced on Thursday that it has placed an order with the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) for 118 indigenous Arjun Mark 1A main battle tanks (MBTs) for the army. The Arjun Mark 1A has been developed by the Central Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE) in Chennai, a Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) laboratory and will be manufactured in the OFB’s Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF), Avadi.

IAF gets a new chief: Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari takes over
On September 30, Indian Air Force (IAF) welcomed a seasoned fighter pilot, Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari, as the 27th Chief of the Air Staff. He took over from Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria.
Air Marshal Sandeep Singh on Friday took charge as the new Vice Chief of the Indian Air Force, succeeding Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari.

MoD approves procurement of military hardware & platforms worth INR 13,165 crore
The defence ministry on September 29 approved the procurement of military platforms and hardware worth INR 13,165 crore, which includes 25 indigenously-developed ALH Mark-III helicopters. The cost of acquiring the helicopters has been estimated at INR 3,850 crore, while a batch of rocket ammunition will be procured for INR 4,962 crore, the defence ministry said. Out of the total procurements, equipment and platforms worth INR 11,486 crore will be sourced from domestic entities.

Indian Army's artillery modernisation plan has hit a roadblock
The modernization plan of the Indian Army to procure indigenous 3,000-3,600 howitzers by 2025-27 has run into problems. Indian Army was planning to acquire Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS), and Dhanush, known as the ‘Desi Bofors’, under the Field Artillery Rationalisation Programme (FARP), which was approved after more than two decades.

Army taps Bengaluru-based firm for specialised sights in use with forces abroad
The Army has placed orders with an Indian firm for specialised sights under emergency procurement, to help some of its elite units operating in both urban warfare and at the borders. One contract is for about 600 pieces of multi-functional thermal imaging binoculars for target acquisition, and the other is for multi mission-sight, which can be mounted on the helmet and also the weapon. The order was placed with a Bengaluru-based firm, Tonbo Imaging.
