Government bans single-use plastic from July‘22
The items that will be banned beginning next year are—Earbuds with plastic sticks, plastic sticks for balloons, plastic flags, candy sticks, ice-cream sticks, polystyrene (thermocol) for decoration, plastic plates, cups, glasses, cutlery such as forks, spoons and knives, straws, trays, wrapping films around sweet boxes, invitation cards, and cigarette packets, plastic or PVC banners less than 100-microns and stirrers.

Wockhardt to manufacture Sputnik V, Sputnik Light
Mumbai-based pharmaceutical and biotechnology company Wockhardt Limited has entered into an agreement with Enso Healthcare and Russian Direct Investment Fund to manufacture COVID-19 Russian vaccines. Wockhardt will manufacture and supply 620 million doses of Sputnik V and Sputnik Light by June 2023.

Two new dinosaur species discovered in China
These are some of the first vertebrates uncovered in the region. In recent years, a number of fossils were unearthed from China’s Turpan-Hami Basin in Xinjiang which included flying pterosaurs, preserved eggs, embryos and fossil fragments of spinal vertebrae and rib cages.

Spicejet’s net loss widens to INR 729 crore
SpiceJet's consolidated net loss increased to INR 729 crores in the April-June quarter, as against INR 593 crores in the year-ago period. Managing Director Ajay Singh said the first quarter was severely impacted by the second wave of COVID-19 when passenger traffic was reduced. SpiceJet added that it continues to incur costs related to the grounding of Boeing 737 Max jets in India.

Justice Ayesha Malik to become first woman Chief Justice of Pakistan
Justice Ayesha Malik is set to become the first woman Chief Justice of Pakistan after outgoing CJP Mushir Alam recommended her for the elevation in the Supreme Court. Justice Alam is set to retire on August 17 and a judicial committee is considering Malik as a judge for the top court. She is currently at the Lahore High Court and ranks four on the seniority list.

Navy cancels unfurling of tricolour on Goa island after locals oppose
The unfurling of the national flag on the Sao Jacinto island was cancelled in South Goa after locals said they did not want any authorities from the Central government or the state government to carry out any activities on the island. They, however, made it clear that they were not opposed to unfurling of the flag. They said that the residents of the village would hoist the flag themselves.

PETA calls on IOC to ban equestrian events from future Olympic Games
In an incident that went viral on social media, Germany’s Annika Schleu was filmed whipping her horse Saint Boy after he refused to jump during the modern pentathlon competition.
German coach and trainer Kim Raisner was also shown hitting the horse. The Modern Pentathlon federation quickly disqualified Raisner from involvement in the men’s event for her actions. As a result, PETA has urged to ban equestrian events citing cruelty to horses.

Anderson becomes oldest pacer to take 5-wicket haul in the last 70 years of Test Cricket
At the age of 39 years and 14 days, Anderson became the oldest pacer to claim a five-wicket haul in men's Tests since 1951. Richard Hadlee is the only other pacer with a five-for after turning 39 in this period. Overall, Bert Ironmonger of Australia is the oldest with a Test five-for. He was 49 years and 313 days old when he picked up 5 for 6 and 6 for 18 against South Africa in Melbourne in 1932.
