33% of the Indian population has received the first dose
With a population close to 135 crore, India touched the 33% vaccination mark for the entire population today. Currently, vaccination is open only for the 18+ age group, and it is estimated that close to 40% of the demographic has had at least one dose of any of the vaccines.

CM Kejriwal to inaugurate India's first smog tower on August 23
Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal is set to inaugurate India's first smog tower on August 23, 2021, at Baba Kharak Singh Marg, Connaught Place. Gopal Rai, New Delhi's Environment Minister, said that the tower is expected to clean over 1,000 cubic meters of air every second and will reduce Delhi's PM 2.5 and PM 10 levels.

Shashi Tharoor acquitted in criminal case for wife's murder
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor was given a clean chit by a Dehli court in a criminal case under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which relates to abetment to suicide, in the case of his late wife Sunanda Pushkar's death.
"Most grateful, your honour. It's been seven-and-half years of absolute torture. I really appreciate it," Mr Tharoor said.

Calcutta HC orders SBI, SIT probes for Bengal violence
The Calcutta High Court ordered a court-monitored CBI probe into cases of murder and crimes against women during the West Bengal post-election violence. The CBI and the Special Investigation Team (SIT) have been asked to submit status reports to the court within six weeks.

Taliban to stop imports, exports from India via Pak
The Federation of Indian Export Organisation (FIEO) announced that the Taliban, the insurgent group which has taken control over Afghanistan, has stopped all trade-related imports and exports from India through transit routes that cover Pakistan. Currently, India imports close to 85% of its dry fruit from Afghanistan.

Pfizer, AstraZeneca less effective against Delta variant: Oxford
The vaccines by Pfizer and AstraZeneca are less effective against the Delta variant of coronavirus compared to the initial Alpha variant, according to a study led by researchers at the University of Oxford. The researchers also found that a single dose of the Moderna vaccine had similar or greater effectiveness against the Delta variant as single doses of the other vaccines.

Covid vaccine for children, likely by September: ICMR-NIV
According to the Indian Council of Medical Research's National Institute of Virology, children between the age of 2 to 18 may get their own vaccination against Covid-19 by September. Presently, Covaxin's phase 2 and 3 trials are going on and results are expected later this month.
