No deaths reported due to lack of oxygen: Govt
“No deaths due to lack of oxygen have been specifically reported by States and Union Territories,” the Health Ministry said in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday in response to a question on the acute shortage of oxygen during the second wave of the COVID pandemic. The Central government, during the second wave, had supported the states, providing oxygen and other consumables.
The Minister also noted that the supply of medical oxygen to hospitals is determined by contractual arrangements between the concerned hospital and the medical oxygen supplier.

Asteroid to fly past earth on July 24
The asteroid '2008 GO20,' sized about 220 metres in diameter, will reach its closest approach to Earth at around 3 am on July 25 (IST) according to NASA's database of Near-earth objects. The asteroid is to pass at a distance of 4.7 million kilometres from Earth.

ICMR clueless about total development cost of Covaxin
The RTI query revealed that ICMR had contributed Rs 35 crore to develop the vaccine and it would get a mere 5 per cent of the royalties when the profits start coming in. Bharat Biotech has justified the high price, saying it needs to recover the cost of product development, manufacturing facilities and clinical trials. The government has capped the price of Covaxin at Rs 1,410 per dose in private hospitals.

SC raps Kerala govt for easing Covid-19 curbs for Bakrid
The Supreme Court on Tuesday termed as 'wholly uncalled for' the relaxations granted by the Kerala government for the Bakrid festival in areas having the highest COVID-19 positivity rate and warned that it will take action if the easing of curbs leads to further spread of the virus. The bench headed by Justice R F Nariman said that pressure groups of any kind, religious or otherwise, cannot in any manner interfere with the right to life.

Canada suspends flights from India until August 21
The Canadian government has extended the prohibition on direct flights from India by another 30 days. The ban was set to expire on July 21, but will now remain in place until August 21. Passengers from India connecting at another point of departure for Canada will require a mandatory pre-departure negative RT-PCR test before continuing their journey to the Canadian destination.

Actor Shilpa Shetty's husband, businessman Raj Kundra has been arrested by the Mumbai police over a case involving pornographic films. The case was registered with the Mumbai Crime Branch in February this year. Denying any wrongdoing, Raj Kundra had sought anticipatory bail in the case.

China unveils 600 kph maglev train
The maximum speed would make the train, self-developed by China and manufactured in the coastal city of Qingdao, the fastest ground vehicle globally. Using electromagnetic force, the maglev train "levitates" above the track with no contact between body and rail. At 600 kph, it would only take 2.5 hours to travel from Beijing to Shanghai by train - a journey of more than 1,000 km.

India offered 7.5 million doses of Moderna vaccine
India has been offered 7.5 million doses of Moderna’s Covid-19 vaccine through the COVAX global vaccine sharing programme, but it is not clear when the jabs will arrive in the country as a consensus on the indemnity clause is yet to be reached. Moderna’s Covid-19 vaccine was granted emergency use authorisation by India’s drug regulator last month.
