India administers record 81 lakh Covid jabs on Day 1 of new vaccination phase; Daily count of new Covid-19 cases lowest in 88 days
Nearly 81 lakh Covid vaccine doses were administered on Day 1 of the implementation of revised guidelines for Covid-19 vaccination by 8:00 PM.
India reported 53,256 new coronavirus infections, the lowest in 88 days, taking the total tally of Covid-19 cases to 2,99,35,221, while the active cases further reduced to 7,02,887, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Monday.
Delhi reports less than 100 cases; positivity rate @0.16%
The national capital reported 89 Covid cases, the lowest this year so far and 11 deaths on Monday, while the positivity rate dipped to 0.16%. Good news is that the positivity rate has dipped to an all time low. We request all of you to not let your guards down and follow Covid appropriate behaviour.

Assam to gradually implement two-child policy for availing govt benefits: CM
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Saturday, said that the Assam government will gradually implement a two-child policy for availing benefits under specific schemes, like housing, funded by the state.
The proposed population control bill, however, will not be applicable in all schemes immediately, for example those offered by the Centre like Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojna or schemes such as free admission in schools and colleges.

Amarnath Yatra cancelled for the second year in a row amid Covid-19
Earlier, in view of the evolving Covid-19 situation, registration for Amarnath Yatra was temporarily suspended. The Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board had said that the situation is being constantly monitored. The 56-day Amarnath Yatra was due to start simultaneously on both routes from June 28 and culminate on Raksha Bandhan, August 22. The Office of the Lt. Governor of Jammu & Kashmir tweeted: "It's important to save people's lives. So, it is not advisable to hold and conduct this year's pilgrimage in the larger public interest."

"Highly unfair": India slams Tokyo Olympic rules for Covid-hit nations
Tokyo 2020 organisers said, on Monday, that additional measures will be used to reduce infection risks from several countries that have seen "significant impact from variants" of Covid-19. The sports administrators said 11 countries, including India, Pakistan and the UK, would be affected.
The protocols will involve daily testing of athletes for a week before they depart for Japan and for them to "refrain from coming into contact with other teams for three days after they arrive" in Japan. But the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) said the rules would cause athletes to lose three crucial training days.

Food crisis in North Korea
North Korea is facing a severe food crisis with prices of essential commodities shooting through the roof. North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un flagged a “tense” food situation in the country caused because of the Covid-19 pandemic and typhoons witnessed last year. According to the reports, prices of essential food items have skyrocketed in the country’s capital Pyongyang. A kilogram of bananas is reportedly selling for USD 45 (about INR 3,335), a packet of black tea for USD 70 (about INR 5,190) and a packet of coffee for USD 100 (INR 7,414). According to a recent report by the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization, North Korea is short of 8,60,000 tonnes of food.

Upto 10,000 fans allowed at Tokyo Olympic Games
The decision to allow 10k fans was taken just weeks before the opening ceremony, ending months of speculation about whether domestic spectators would be able to attend the pandemic-postponed Games. Overseas fans were banned in March. A lottery will determine which existing ticket-holders can attend the Games that will be unlike any other, with cheering banned, masks mandatory, and fans told to go straight home after the competition.
