New Covid strain detected by Pune virologists
A new Covid variant that needs more antibodies to fight it and has more severe symptoms has been found by the National Institute of Virology in Pune. The variant, B.1.1.28.2, was detected in samples from two travellers from Brazil but not from anyone in India. The new variant is likely to cause severe symptoms.

CO2 emissions at record high despite Covid-19 pandemic
The carbon dioxide (CO2) in the earth's atmosphere has again peaked last month, reaching historic levels. Atmospheric carbon dioxide peaked for 2021 in May at a monthly average of 419 parts per million (ppm), the highest level since accurate measurements began 63 years ago, scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego announced. The NOAA report, however, stated that the effect of the pandemic had no discernible effect on the historic CO2 record.

Uddhav Thackeray meets PM Modi, discusses Maratha quota, GST compensation
Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, on Tuesday, reached the national capital to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and discussed issues related to the Maratha reservation, metro car shed and GST compensation. Deputy Chief Minister and senior NCP leader Ajit Pawar, and senior Congress leader Ashok Chavan accompanied Thackeray. He said the state government wants to move the car shed to Kanjur. The state and the Centre both claim the land as theirs.
Thackeray said the issue of giving Marathi the status of classical language is also pending with the Centre. He said that the prime minister assured to look into these issues.

Nirmala Sitharaman asks Infosys to fix glitches in the new income tax e-filing portal
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, on Tuesday, asked Infosys and its chairman Nandan Nilekani to fix glitches associated with the new income tax e-filing portal that was launched on Monday. The portal was developed by Infosys. Infosys was awarded the contract in 2019 after the bidding process with an outlay of Rs 4,242 crore. FM Sitharaman said that she received many grievances about glitches from citizens on her Twitter timeline and urged Infosys to fix them and ensure that there is no “let down” in the quality of service being provided to taxpayers.

Oxygen mock drill at private hospital in Agra allegedly causes death of 22 Covid patients
A video, purportedly, of a director of a private nursing home in Agra claiming several Covid patients died as a result of a mock exercise that allegedly cut off medical oxygen supply, has gone viral. Both Agra District Magistrate P.N. Singh and CMO R.C. Pandey, on Tuesday, reacted to the development, saying an inquiry has been ordered and action would follow on the basis of its report. In a statement, the DM claimed that there was no death due to lack of oxygen on the day that the alleged video was recorded. However, he said a probe would be conducted.

Indian football talisman Sunil Chhetri has surpassed Argentina's global superstar Lionel Messi to become the second highest active international goal scorer with 74 strikes. The 36 year old Chhetri achieved the feat with his brace against Bangladesh in the joint preliminary qualifying round match for 2022 FIFA World Cup and 2023 AFC Asian Cup on Monday night.

Reddit, Guardian, NYTimes, Amazon and half the internet websites went down in major outage
Websites around the world were temporarily down during a massive outage early Tuesday. Multiple news outlets were taken offline, including BBC, Bloomberg News, CNN, The Financial Times, The Guardian, The New York Times and The Verge. Other websites like Reddit, Pinterest and Twitch were also affected by the outage. Amazon's and Target's retail websites and the U.K.'s government website — Gov.uk were not working at some point, too.

Annular solar eclipse on June 10
An annular solar eclipse is going to occur on Thursday but it will not be visible in India except in some parts of Arunachal Pradesh and Ladakh for a few minutes before the sunset. The annular solar eclipse occurs when the sun, moon and the earth come in a straight line and almost on the same plane. It is a partial eclipse when a ring of fire appears in the sky.
