El Salvador becomes the first country to grant legal tender status to Bitcoin
El Salvador became the first nation in the entire world to officially grant legal tender status to cryptocurrency Bitcoin. A majority of the South American country's lawmakers gave their nod to a bill presented by President Nayib Bukele, which proposed embracing the world's highest-valued cryptocurrency as legal tender in the country. Its adoption as legal tender will go into law in 90 days. Bukele said that people who invest in Bitcoin in El Salvador will get citizenship in the country.

Cabinet approves hike in MSP for kharif crops for 2021-22 amid farm stir
In a bid to increase the farmers' income, the Union Cabinet, on Wednesday, approved an increase in minimum support prices (MSP) for various Kharif crops or the summer-sown crops for marketing season 2021-22.
The Centre has hiked paddy MSP by 72 INR to 1,940 INR per quintal for 2021-22 crop year from 1,868 INR per quintal last year.
The highest absolute increase in MSP over the previous year has been recommended for sesamum (452 INR per quintal) followed by tur and urad (300 INR per quintal each).

Congress to hold nationwide wide protest against rising fuel prices on June 11
Congress will hold a nationwide “symbolic protest” in front of petrol pumps on June 11 across the country against rising fuel prices. The opposition party has decided to hit the streets after the fuel prices have crossed the hundred rupees mark in several states. The party workers will also protest against the rising inflation. Petrol was selling at 95.56 INR per litre while diesel prices touched 86.47 INR in the national capital. In Mumbai, the price of petrol was set at 101.76 INR per litre while the price of diesel stood at 93.85 INR per litre.

Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik sanctions nearly 26 crore INR Covid assistance for street vendors
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, on Tuesday, sanctioned an amount of 26,29,71,000 INR from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF) as Covid-19 assistance for street vendors in urban areas. As per an official communique, the Covid-19 wave has had a profound effect on livelihoods. Street vendors in urban areas are suffering financially due to lockdowns meant to control the infection. The financial assistance will support and benefit at least 87,657 street vendors of the state.

Equity mutual funds see net inflow of over 10,000 crore INR in May
Equity mutual funds witnessed a net inflow of over 10,000 crore INR in May, making it the third consecutive monthly infusion. This is a 14-month high i.e. highest since March 2020.
This was way higher than the 3,437 crore INR net inflow seen in April and 9,115 crore INR inflow in March, data from the Association of Mutual Funds in India showed on Wednesday.
On the other hand, investors pulled out 44,512 INR crore from debt mutual funds last month after infusing over 1 lakh crore INR in April.

Congress leader Jitin Prasada joins the BJP ahead of 2022 Uttar Pradesh elections
Amid continued infighting in its Punjab and Rajasthan units, the Congress suffered a major jolt on Wednesday as it lost Jitin Prasada, a prominent young face from Uttar Pradesh to the BJP.
Walking in the footsteps of his father Jitender Prasada, who contested against Sonia Gandhi for the post of Congress President in 1999, Jitin raised a banner of revolt against his party, quitting ahead of the crucial 2022 Uttar Pradesh elections.
Jitin was part of the group of 23 leaders who had written to party chief Sonia Gandhi last October seeking organizational overhaul and elections at all levels.

Anup Chandra Pandey appointed EC
President Ram Nath Kovind, on Tuesday, appointed Anup Chandra Pandey, a retired Uttar Pradesh cadre IAS officer, to the post of Election Commissioner. Mr Pandey, a 1984 batch IAS, served as the former chief secretary of Uttar Pradesh. Pandey was appointed to the position left vacant by former Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora’s retirement on April 12.

IISc world’s top research university in QS World Rankings, is 1st Indian varsity to score a 100
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, has been ranked the “world’s top research university,” in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World Rankings 2022, an annual publication of university rankings.
“According to the Citations Per Faculty (CPF) indicator, when universities are adjusted for faculty size (the size of the institution is taken into account for calculating the CPF), IISc Bangalore is the world’s top research university, achieving a perfect score of 100/100 for this metric”, a press statement issued by QS stated.
Citations per faculty is one of the six broad parameters on which the QS rankings are based and measures research impact. It divides the total number of citations received by a university’s research papers over five years by the number of faculty at an institution.
