Cyclone Tauktae update
The cyclonic storm Tauktae that intensified into a very severe level cyclonic storm has presently started to wreak havoc on the western ghats on the Indian Peninsula. Mumbai was hit with fatal storms and heavy rains. The cyclone is expected to make landfall in Gujarat soon.
In Maharashtra’s Konkan region, six people died due to this cyclone and two sailors are missing after their boats sank. Karnataka and Goa also reported six and two casualties respectively on May 16th.

COVID-19 crisis: Russian vaccine Sputnik V available on CoWIN portal
Apollo Hospitals in Hyderabad has started administering Sputnik V, the Russian vaccine against COVID-19, as part of a limited pilot program rolled out by Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories.
The vaccination began at the hospital in Jubilee Hills in Hyderabad on May 17 and will be launched at the Apollo Hospitals in Visakhapatnam on May 18. The vaccinations would follow the SOPs as recommended by the government, including registration on CoWIN, a statement said.

Four TMC leaders arrested by CBI in the Narada bribery case granted bail
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday arrested ministers Firhad Hakim, Subrata Mukherjee, TMC MLA Madan Mitra, and Kolkata’s previous Mayor Sovan Chattopadhyay in the Narada bribery case. Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar and the Calcutta High Court gave their consent to the CBI for filing a charge sheet against the four accused and sanctioned prosecution against them.
These ex-state ministers were caught taking money on tape in the alleged Narada sting operation before the 2016 state assembly polls.

Political leaders cannot hoard Covid-19 medicines: Delhi HC
The Delhi High Court drew up the state’s police to investigate the allegations of hoardings of Covid medicines by multiple political leaders. The High court ordered them to surrender the medicines available with them to the state health department immediately.

Covishield second dose appointment booked already won't be canceled: Government
People who have already booked their online appointments for the second dosage of the Covishield vaccine will be provided with the vaccine, confirms the Union Health Ministry. The needful changes have now been done in the digital booking portal which means that additional appointment bookings will not be possible if the period after the first dose is less than 84 days.

What’s happening in Nepal with Covid-19
In the midst of political turmoil, Nepal struggles severely with Covid-19 as the positivity rate has surpassed 50%. On May 16, 7400 new Covid cases were reported.
The country’s 30Mm population presently has only 1555 ICU beds, 453 ventilators and 1555 high dependency units. They’re not equipped to fight a wave so strong and hence this crisis deserves global media attention.
Sensex adds 848 pts, ends at 49,581 on broad-based buying; Nifty Bank up 4%
A sharp drop in Covid-19 cases lifted benchmark indices nearly 2% higher on Monday. Sensex rallied 848 points to settle the day at 49,581 levels, lifted largely by Bank Nifty.
Eight of the top 10 index contributors included HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, HDFC, SBI, Axis Bank, and Kotak Mahindra Bank. Reliance Industries and Infosys were the remaining two contributors.
