WhatsApp should withdraw new privacy policy, says MeitY in new notice
Calling its updated privacy policy an undermining of the values of informational privacy and data security, the Ministry of electronics and information technology (MeitY) has sent a new notice to WhatsApp asking the Facebook-owned messaging platform to withdraw its updated privacy policy.
The IT ministry has given Whatsapp time till May 25 to respond to the new notice, failing which, “all necessary steps in consonance with the law” could be taken against the platform.
Sources said that the IT ministry once again took up the issue of discriminatory treatment to Indian WhatsApp users compared to those in Europe.

Israel says it has no ‘time frame’ to end Gaza hostilities
Israel PM Netanyahu on Wednesday said that it was not setting a timeframe for an end to hostilities with Gaza as its military pounded the Palestinian enclave with air strikes and Hamas militants unleashed new cross-border rocket attacks.
Palestinian medical officials said 219 people had now been killed in 10 days of aerial bombardments whereas Israeli authorities put the death toll at 12 in Israel.

Rural unemployment doubles to 14% in 1 week
Due to lockdown in most of the states and surging Covid infections in villages rural unemployment has nearly doubled in a week, halting the economic activity.
Data from the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) showed that rural unemployment which was at 7.29% in the week ending May 9 has gone up to 14.34% in the week ending May 16. Rural unemployment is at a 50-week high: the last time it was higher was nearly a year ago, on June 7, 2020.

Astronomers discover how the Milky Way galaxy was formed
Lead researchers at Ohio State University have given out some new facts on the formation of the Milky Way Galaxy and its merger with a key satellite galaxy.
The team identified the accurate ages of a sample of about a hundred red giant stars in the galaxy and was able to show what happened when the milky way merged with an orbiting satellite galaxy, known as Gaia-Enceladus, about 10 billion years ago.

Singapore foreign minister slams Arvind Kejriwal, asks him to 'stick to facts'
On Tuesday, Kejriwal had taken to Twitter to claim that a new variant of Covid-19 was found in Singapore and appealed to the Indian government to shut down flights to and from Singapore to not let the ‘new variant’ reach India. Post the debacle, Union Cabinet Minister Dr. S Jaishankar had to issue a clarification on Kejriwal’s unwarranted statement. Singapore’s Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan too took to Twitter to suggest that politicians should stick to facts and slammed Kejriwal’s statement reiterating that there is “no Singapore variant.”

Black Fungus declared an epidemic in Rajasthan
Amid rising cases of Mucormycosis (black fungus), which is primarily affecting people recovering from COVID-19, the Rajasthan government on Wednesday declared it as an epidemic. Till now, cases of black fungus have been reported in various parts of the country including Karnataka, Uttarakhand, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, and Bihar.

Asia Cup called off due to rising COVID-19 cases in Sri Lanka
The 2021 Asia Cup, which was shifted from Pakistan to Sri Lanka, was called off on Wednesday due to rising coronavirus cases in the island nation. The Asia Cup, which was last held in 2018, was scheduled to be held in June but Sri Lanka Cricket CEO Ashley de Silva announced that it will be difficult for them to conduct the tournament.

PM Announces Rs 1,000 Cr Relief Fund for Gujarat and financial aid to states affected by Tauktae
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who conducted an aerial survey of the Cyclone Tauktae affected areas in Gujarat on Wednesday, announced a financial assistance of INR 1,000 crore for immediate relief measures in the state. He also announced Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia for next of kin of those who lost their lives and Rs 50,000 for those injured due to the cyclone across India.
