WhatsApp sues government, says new digital rules mean end to user privacy
WhatsApp has filed a lawsuit in the Delhi High Court against the government's new digital rules that take effect today, saying these would compel it to break privacy protections to users.
The Facebook-owned messaging service filed its petition on Tuesday against the rules that will require it to "trace" the origin of messages sent on the service, which it says is a violation of privacy.

Government's response to Whatsapp lawsuit
Responding to WhatsApp's lawsuit challenging new digital rules on grounds of violation of user privacy, the government said today it is committed to the right to privacy of citizens but it is subject to "reasonable restrictions" and "no fundamental right is absolute".
The IT Ministry also doubled down on the rules, writing to all significant social media platforms asking for details of their compliance. "Please confirm and share your response ASAP and preferably today itself," said the note.

Top medical body IMA sends ₹ 1,000 crore defamation notice to Ramdev
Indian Medical Association (IMA), Uttarakhand has sent a defamation notice of ₹1000 crore to Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev, after Ramdev made remarks regarding allopathy doctors.
The notice says that if Baba doesn’t post a video of him countering his statements and tender a written apology within the next 15 days, then a sum of ₹1,000 crores will be demanded from him.
This has come after Ramdev withdrew his statements on allopathic medicine after receiving a strongly-worded letter from Union Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan calling his remarks "inappropriate".

Covid-19 vaccine wastage as high as 37% in some states: Centre
While vaccine shortage has hampered Covid-19 vaccination programs in several states, vaccine wastage is as high as 37.3% in Jharkhand (37.3%), 30.2% in Chhattisgarh and 15.5% in Tamil Nadu.
Similarly, Jammu and Kashmir (10.8%), Madhya Pradesh (10.7%) are reporting much higher wastage than the national average (6.3%) when States have been urged repeatedly to keep vaccine wastage below 1%, according to the data available with the union health ministry.

Why arrest some and spare others in Narada case: Supreme Court
While forcing the CBI to withdraw its plea challenging the Calcutta High Court’s decision to put four Narada scam charge-sheeted TMC leaders under house arrest, the Supreme Court has posed tough questions to CBI.
Court questioned the “partial approach” of the bureau in arresting a set of persons named in the FIR while sparing another set of TMC leaders who have now defected to BJP.
At the same time, the Court also disapproved of the dharnas by CM Mamta Banarjee and his ministers to protest the arrests of accused on May 17.

JEE Advanced exam postponed due to surge in Covid-19 cases in the country
Since the JEE Mains examination could not be held at the scheduled time (May 24-28), the JEE Advanced examination, which was going to be held on July 3, has also been postponed, the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur announced. This decision will be applicable to all central higher educational institutions across the country. Such higher educational institutions, which receive financial aid from the government, will also have to postpone these too.

CoWIN guidelines for API usage to allow booking of Covid-19 vaccine slots via third-party apps
The government is going to make modifications in CoWIN API usage so that any third party will be able to do registration, scheduling and management of vaccination through their apps.
This is an update to the existing framework in which developers can only offer information on the availability of slots and downloading of vaccination certificates via their apps.
The government had also recently revised the CoWIN public API guidelines to defer delivery of appointment data to third-party apps, which made Covid-19 vaccine availability information via apps like Paytm and HealthifyMe dated and unreliable.

Farmers observe ‘Black Day’ to mark 6 months of protests against farm laws
To mark six months of protests at the borders of the national capital over the farm laws, farmers observed a nationwide ‘Resistance Day’ on Wednesday. Farmers from Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh have been protesting at Singhu, Tikri and Ghazipur since November 26, 2020. Their last round of talks with the government was held on January 22.
