Facebook whistleblower reveals identity
The Facebook whistleblower who leaked thousands of pages of internal research and documents was revealed on "60 Minutes" Sunday night as Frances Haugen. She said political parties have been quoted in Facebook’s own research saying they know Facebook changed its algorithm and “now if [they] don't publish angry, hateful, polarizing… content,” there’s less engagement. Haugen was recruited by Facebook in 2019 and took the job to work on addressing misinformation.

Pandora papers: Biggest ever leak of offshore financial secrets
The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists got over 11.9 Mn confidential documents that claim to have financial secrets of several world leaders, politicians, and celebrities in 91 countries, including India. The documents show offshore dealings routed through tax havens across the world.

David Julius, Ardem Patapoutian win 2021 Nobel Prize in Medicine
The Nobel Prize 2021 in physiology and medicine has been jointly awarded to David Julius and Ardem Patapoutian for their discoveries of receptors for temperature and touch. The two US-based scientists received the accolade for describing the mechanics of how humans perceive temperature and pressure through nerve impulses.

Germany will not proceed with Covaxin unless WHO approves it
Indians vaccinated with Covaxin currently travelling to Germany will have to undergo quarantine and produce a negative test. The German Ambassador to India said that this is because the World Health Organization has not yet recognized Covaxin. Germany would take the next step regarding Covaxin once it is recognized.

Supreme Court approves Centre's Covid deaths compensation scheme
The SC accepted the Centre's submission that ₹50,000 compensation should be paid to the relatives of those who died after contracting the coronavirus. It will include both past and future deaths. It also said compensation should not be denied if the death certificate doesn't state COVID-19 as the cause of death.

Over 2.5 crore informal workers registered on the e-Shram portal
The labour ministry said in a statement, "More than 2.5 crore registrations have been done so far on the portal." e-Shram portal is India's first-ever national database of unorganized workers, including migrant workers, construction workers, platform and gig workers.

NEET will not be cancelled: SC
While observing that "Instances of impersonation and paper leakage cannot be to the detriment to the lakhs of students who have appeared for the exam." On Monday, the Supreme Court dismissed a petition seeking the cancellation of the NEET-UG 2021 exam and conduct fresh exams for NEET-UG due to allegations of widespread use of malpractices and paper leaks.

Union Minister's son booked for murder after 8 killed in UP
At least 8 people were killed in violence that erupted in UP after a car, allegedly owned by Union Minister Ajay Mishra Teni's son, ran over 4 farmers during a protest. Angry farmers then reportedly beat up 4 BJP workers to death and set their vehicles on fire. However, the minister claims that the driver lost control due to farmers throwing stones at the car.

70% of India's adult population given their first dose
On Monday, Union Health minister Mansukh Mandaviya said that 70% of India's adult population had been administered the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, as the total amount given in the country crosses 91 Cr. Official reports show that 25% of the adult population has been administered both vaccine doses.
