Centre increases abortion limit to 24 weeks
The government has notified new rules, under which the limit for terminating a pregnancy increases from 20 to 24 weeks for specific categories of women. These categories include survivors of sexual assault or rape or incest, minors, women whose marital status changes, physical disabilities, mentally ill women and cases of foetal malformation.

NIA, Armed Forces launch simultaneous operations in Kashmir valley
Ahead of Union Home Minister Amit Shah's scheduled visit to Kashmir, around October 22-23, a massive crackdown continued in the Kashmir Valley, with the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the armed forces simultaneously launching operations. The NIA arrested 9 people for their claimed involvement in militant plots. A top Jaish-e-Muhammad commander Sham Sofi was killed in a separate encounter in the Tral area of S. Kashmir.

India's retail inflation drops to 4.35%, compared to 7.34% last year
Based on Consumer Price Index (CPI), the retail inflation growth in the country fell to 4.35% in September as food prices dropped, compared to the retail inflation last year this time, which had jumped to an 8-month high of 7.34%, primarily driven by higher food inflation, revealed the data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI).

Escalating edible oil prices force fresh import duty cuts
Triggered by the high retail inflation in edible oils and fats of 34.2% for September, the government has decided to exempt crude palm, soya-bean and sunflower seed oils from customs duty and slash the Agriculture Infrastructure and Development Cess (AIDC) levied on their imports from October 14 till March 31, 2022.

Global COVID deaths lowest in nearly a year: WHO
On Wednesday, World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus notified that COVID-19 mortality fell to its lowest level in about a year last week at nearly 50,000 deaths. “It's still an unacceptably high level, almost 50,000 deaths a week," Tedros said. "And the real number is certainly higher.”

World's first plant-based vaccine by a Japanese drugmaker
A Japanese drugmaker backed by the company that owns Marlboro cigarettes plans to introduce the world's first plant-based Covid-19 vaccine. Drugmaker Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma said Tuesday that Medicago, its Quebec-based subsidiary that developed the shot, would apply for Canadian approval by the end of 2021.
