More than 1 lakh Indian schools with only 1 teacher: UNESCO
According to UNESCO's ‘2021 State of the Education Report for India: No Lecturers, No Class’ around 1.1 lakh schools in India have only 1 teacher. A total of 19% or 11.16 lakhs of instructing positions in colleges lie vacant within the nation, 69% of them being in rural areas. The 3 states with more than 1 lakh vacancies are UP, Bihar and West Bengal.

Revenge tourism will trigger 3rd wave: ICMR
The Indian Council on Medical Research has warned that the surge in ‘revenge tourism’ could trigger a 3rd wave of infection in the country. It also warned tourist-centric states to strictly follow COVID-19 protocols and check for vaccination certificates & RT-PCR tests. Research says that tourism increases the population of these states by ~40%, increasing the likelihood of community transmission exponentially.

14% adolescents facing pandemic blues
According to a brand-new report by UNICEF, ~14% of 15 to 24-year-olds in India are reporting “often feeling depressed” or “having little interest in doing things.” There is a wide concern about the impact of the pandemic on mental health. Research indicates some increases in stress and anxiety among children and adolescents.

Renewal fees of old private and commercial vehicles up by 8x
April 2022 onwards, the owner of more than 15-year-old vehicles will have to spend 8 times higher fees to renew their vehicle or get a renewed certificate issue for their buses/ trucks. However, Delhi would remain unimpacted by this change in policy, as 10-years old diesel vehicles and 15-years old petrol vehicles are already banned.

AP to provide sanitary napkins to more than 10 lakh students
YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh launched the ‘Swechha’ program aimed towards the sanitary health of adolescent girls studying in government schools and colleges. The program envisages the distribution of quality sanitary napkins for free. The state government is also taking the initiative to improve toilets under the 'Nedu-Nedu' initiative.

Gaming apps involving betting banned in Karnataka
Mobile Premier League (MPL) and other gaming apps began blocking access to users in Karnataka on Wednesday, after the imposition of a state-wide ban on online gaming. The law bans online games involving betting and wagering, and “any act of risking money, or otherwise on the unknown result of an event, including a game of skill”. Dream11, however, is still functional.

List and MacMillan win Nobel Prize for Chemistry
Benjamin List and David WC MacMillan were awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry. They were recognized for their work in developing a new way for building molecules known as “Asymmetric Organocatalysis.” The prizes for literature, peace, and economics will also be announced in the next few days.

216,000 children sexually abused by French Catholic Church
According to an inquiry, the clergy of the French Catholic Church has been to be sexually abusing 216,000 children - mostly boys - since 1950. At least 2,900 - 3,200 abusers accused the church of displaying a “cruel indifference towards the victims”. The count could rise to 330,000 if other non-religious members of the church are also taken into account.

Future Retail ends its agreement for 7-Eleven stores in India
In February 2019, Future Retail signed up with 7-Eleven Inc. to develop and operate stores in India. On Tuesday, Future Group-owned Future Retail announced its termination of the Master Franchise Agreement after over 2 years of plan to run in India. The agreement fell through as the Future-7 “was not able to meet the target of opening stores and payment of franchise fees.”
