R-value of COVID-19 drops below 1, good indication for India
The overall R-value (reproductive number) for India fell from 1.17 in August 2021 to 0.92 in the mid of September 2021, indicating a decrease in the transmission of the COVID-19 infection. However, the R-values of major cities, including Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Bengaluru, are still over 1. The R-values of Maharashtra and Kerala have fallen below 1, which is a good sign for these states with the highest number of active cases.

India ranked 46th in the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2021 rankings by the World Intellectual Property Organization, climbing 2 spots. GII is an important tool for governments to assess social and economic changes. India rose from a rank of 81 in 2015 due to knowledge capital, startup ecosystem and stellar work by Research organisations.

Assam govt to burn 2,500 Rhino horns today to bust myths
To mark World Rhino Day 2021, 2,479 Rhino horns will be burned in Assam today. This is aimed at sending a message to those involved in the illegal trade of Rhino horns, proving that it is not medicine. Rhino horns are used in orthodox Chinese medicine to cure a range of illnesses, from cancer to hangovers. Hence, it fetches a high price in the black market.

FSSAI introduces logo for vegan products
In response to the increasing adoption of veganism and consequent consumption of vegan food products, the FSSAI has introduced a new logo to “help consumers easily identify and differentiate from non-vegan foods”. The new logo is green, with a ‘V’ inscribed in the middle of a square box. It contains a small plant on top of it and vegan written at the bottom.

UK govt approves Covishield for travel, revises COVID-19 advisory
The United Kingdom government, on Wednesday, revised its travel advisory to include Covishield as an approved vaccine. However, double vaccinated travellers would still need to quarantine as the vaccination certification remains an issue, the UK govt clarified. This decision comes a day after India warned UK of "reciprocal measures" if it did not address the concerns regarding vaccine certification.

SRH player tests COVID positive ahead of match with DC
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) player - T Natarajan, tested positive for COVID-19 just before their match against the Delhi Capitals (DC) on Wednesday, September 22, 2021. Six other members of SRH have also been isolated. The DC vs SRH match is expected to go on as per schedule in Dubai as the rest of the SRH squad members tested negative.

J&K govt sacked 6 employees for having terror links
The Jammu & Kashmir government sacked 6 of its employees for having alleged terror links. The government dismissed the employees under Article 311, under which no inquiry is held and relief can be sought only from High Court. This is the third such incident in recent months. The government had earlier sacked 3 employees in June, and 11 employees in July.

INR 50,000 to be provided to the families affected by COVID-19
An ex-gratia amount of INR 50,000 was recommended by The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to be given to the kin of those who died due to COVID-19. The Centre made this clarification to the Supreme Court on Wednesday. The State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) will be providing ex-gratia assistance.

Depositors of 21 failed co-op banks to get deposit insurance cover
Depositors of 21 failed co-operative banks, including PMC Bank, will now get deposit insurance cover of up to INR 5 lakhs from the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC). The banks have been asked to submit the claims within 45 days (latest by October 15) after obtaining the willingness of depositors to claim deposit insurance. DICGC will pay the depositors of the insured banks within 90 days of claim submission.
