Child labour rises to 160 million – first increase in two decades
The number of children in child labour has risen to 160 million worldwide – an increase of 8.4 million children in the last four years – with millions more at risk due to the impact of Covid-19, according to a new report by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and UNICEF. While the percentage of children in child labour remained the same as in 2016, population growth meant that the numbers rose significantly. The report, which is published every four years, showed that children aged between 5 and 11 accounted for over half of the global figure.

Government of Nigeria makes official account on India's Koo
After imposing a ban on microblogging website Twitter in the country, Nigeria joined India's Koo app. The American microblogging site was banned after it deleted one of Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari's posts for "violating" the rules of the platform.

Malad building collapse, 11 people killed
At least 11 people, out of which 8 were children, were killed and 7 injured after a double-storey structure collapsed on another in a slum at Malwani, Malad (West), late on Wednesday night. The incident took place after the city witnessed heavy rainfall throughout the day. Three other buildings nearby are in 'dangerous' condition and the residents have been evacuated, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said.

Delhi ranked 2nd overall among all UTs, but last on gender equality and clean water
Among the eight union territories, New Delhi has secured the second spot in achieving the 16 sustainable development goals set by the NITI Aayog. According to the commission’s latest annual report, the national capital has scored an average score of 68, up from 60 last year. In comparison, the national average is 66. Delhi has led the way in eradicating poverty (81), good health and well being (90), affordable and clean energy (100) and life on land (81). However, it has performed poorly — securing the last spot among the UTs — under the goals of gender equality (33), responsible consumption and production (50) and clean water and sanitation (61)

France is sending a second Statue Of Liberty to USA for Independence Day
The French government is sending the USA a 10-foot bronze replica of the Statue of Liberty, 135 years after the country first gifted the original national monument to the US. This new bronze statue, nicknamed the "little sister", is one-sixteenth the size of the world-famous one that stands at Liberty Island.

Bihar reports more than 9K Covid deaths after Govt audit
Bihar revised its Covid-19 toll on Wednesday by adding 3,951 deaths, a whopping increase of 72.8%. The government undertook the 20-day exercise to audit Covid-19 deaths after the Patna high court flagged irregularities in death figures in Buxar district on May 17. After verification, the state’s Covid-19 cumulative toll jumped to 9,375 on June 8, as against 5,424 reported a day earlier. However, the state seemed to be doing well after more than a month of lockdown as, according to the health department, only 20 deaths and 589 fresh cases were reported on the day.

CBI books Gautam Thapar in Yes Bank fraud case
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a case against industrialist Gautam Thapar of Avantha Realty and Oyster Buildwell Pvt Ltd among several others for allegedly cheating Yes Bank to the tune of 466 crore INR. Along with Mr Thapar, 60, the agency has also named Raghubir Kumar Sharma, Rajendra Kumar Mangal, Tapsi Mahajan, and their companies M/s Oyster Buildwell Pvt Ltd, Avantha Reality Pvt Ltd and unknown officials of Jhabua Power Ltd. The accused and their companies took huge loans from Yes Bank and due to non-payment over time, their accounts turned into NPAs or Non-Performing Assets, say sources.
