A CBS Primetime Original with the erstwhile Duke and Duchess of Sussex aired on March 7, 2021, starting an unanticipated social media wildfire.
Drawing a massive viewership of 17.8 million people on day 1 itself, the show has attracted viewers from all walks of lives considering the astonishing, candid revelations made by the couple about their lives as royals and why they stepped down from their royal duties.
“How dark his skin might be when he is born”
The couple detailed concerns and conversations about how dark Archie's (their first child) skin might be when he is born. The palace also told them it would not provide Meghan and their baby any title or security, which now stands revoked for Harry as well.
Can we imply that the infamous "Meg-xit" was induced by racism in the monarchy?
“I just didn’t want to live anymore”
Meghan spoke about the lack of concern and empathy towards her mental wellbeing in the palace. It is no hidden truth that Princess Diana, mother of Harry and William, had similar struggles with her mental health.
A royal pattern in the making?
“If they had protected us, we wouldn't have left”
The couple detailed many instances and stories where facts were misrepresented in the media, leading to grave personal complications. They also exclaimed that the royal family extended no support to the two in this vicious tabloid mistreatment, unlike they did for other senior members of the family.
“It is nothing what it looks like”
The interview surely questioned the notion of a fairytale that is often associated with the royal family. The issues raised by the couple are grave problems that the society at large is trying to fight today. These allegations put an entire institution in question.
As a response- the royal family has denied allegations while also maintaining that Meghan and Harry are integral parts of their family.
In my opinion, the royal family could have used this diverse union to picture a united front and to set an example for generations to come. Here's hoping that this controversial revelation leads the way for a royal awakening.
On a side note- this is a classic representation of the elitist mentality of the Britishers. They're busy debating Indian farm laws and calling out intolerance in India in their parliament while their royal family is racially discriminating against one of their own. The need to get one's house in order before calling out atrocities elsewhere has never been higher.
