Dengue adds to COVID-hit Bangladesh’s woes as dozens die
Bangladesh has logged nearly 11,000 dengue cases and at least 48 related deaths this year, the government says, underscoring how other viral diseases continue to spread even as the focus remains on the coronavirus pandemic.
The country’s Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Thursday said some 330 dengue cases, the highest single-day number, were reported in the last 24 hours, taking the total caseload to 10,981 since January.

Panjshir forces claim hundreds of Taliban captured
Taliban and opposition forces continue to battle to control the Panjshir Valley north of Kabul with resistance fighters saying they captured hundreds of Taliban troops.
The National Resistance Front (NRF) of Afghanistan, grouping forces loyal to local leader Ahmad Massoud, said on Sunday it surrounded “thousands of terrorists” in Khawak Pass and the Taliban abandoned vehicles and equipment in the Dashte Rewak area.

Several soldiers killed in southwestern Pakistan suicide bombing
A suicide bomber has detonated his explosives near a security checkpoint in restive southwestern Pakistan, killing at least three paramilitary personnel and wounding 15 others.
The attacker walked towards the checkpoint manned by the paramilitary Frontier Corps on Quetta-Mastung Road, 25km (15 miles) south of Quetta, capital of Balochistan province, senior police officer Azhar Akram said on Sunday.

Thousands join Bangkok rally demanding PM’s resignation
Thousands of protesters have gathered in Thailand’s capital to call for the resignation of Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-Ocha, promising to keep up the pressure until he leaves office.
Thursday’s demonstration at the Asoke intersection in central Bangkok was one of the biggest such gatherings this year despite a warning from the police earlier in the day that protests were banned due to coronavirus restrictions.

UK announces new sanctions against Myanmar
The United Kingdom has announced new Myanmar sanctions, saying it was targeting a key business associate of the military government for providing arms and financial support following a coup earlier this year.
The UK’s foreign ministry said it would impose an asset freeze on conglomerate Htoo Group of Companies and its founder Tay Za, adding that the tycoon was involved in arms deals on behalf of the military.

Japan’s Prime Minister Suga to drop out of party election
Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga has announced that he will not run in a ruling Liberal Democratic Party leadership race later this month, setting the stage for his replacement after just one year in office.
“Running in the race and handling coronavirus countermeasures would have required an enormous amount of energy,” he told reporters in Tokyo on Friday.
